Singapore, 26 July 2017 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation) presented a total of 32 scholarships at the annual scholarship awards ceremony held at the SPH News Centre auditorium today.

Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, was the Guest-of-Honour at the event.

There were 4 recipients for the SPH Journalism Scholarships.

A total of 16 scholarships were also given out to the children of staff and newspaper vendors – 6 for junior college studies, 4 for polytechnic studies and 6 for university studies.

Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation said: “Even as we transform our business, we will not forget that SPH is fundamentally a media company. We will hold dear our commitment to quality and responsible journalism. The recent outbreaks of ‘fake news’ only serve to underscore the importance of this commitment to our readers and audience. We will continue to embrace innovation and change for our journalists to stay effective and relevant.”

Ms Li Si Miao is an SPH Journalism scholarship award recipient who did her internship stint with Shin Min Daily News. She will be reading International Relations at the University of Edinburgh.

She said: “The four months I spent with Shin Min Daily News has been challenging and rewarding. I started out not knowing what to expect, and the experience has been anything but predictable. No two days are ever the same and these experiences have really broadened my perspectives as I get to meet people from all walks of life. My journey as a journalist has only just begun and I am very grateful for the scholarship and the opportunity to continue expanding my horizons at the University of Edinburgh.”

Since its inauguration in 2006, the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually. This year marks a major milestone with the presentation of the 100th Lim Kim San Memorial scholar. The bond-free scholarships have helped deserving students from modest family backgrounds further their degree programmes in languages, linguistics and the humanities at local universities. This year, there are 12 recipients receiving the Lim Kim San Memorial scholarships.

One of them is Mr Lee Joon Lei who will be pursuing Social Sciences at the Singapore Management University.

He said: "I am honoured and thankful to have received this scholarship. It lifts a great deal of financial pressure off my parents and it will allow me to focus on doing my best academically."
