SPH & SPH Foundation donate $350,000 to Community Chest

Singapore, 29 August 2017 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and SPH Foundation donated a total of $350,000 to Community Chest in support of its beneficiaries at the annual charity cheque presentation held at the SPH News Centre Auditorium today.
Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, was the Guest-of-Honour at the event.

Every year, SPH and SPH Foundation work with Community Chest to identify charities serving the needy elderly and families, the disabled, as well as disadvantaged children and youth for its annual charity cheque presentation.

Out of the $350,000 donation amount, $150,000 was donated by SPH Foundation in support of the Special Education Financial Assistance (SPED FAS) Scheme in aid of more than 1,000 disabled and special needs students from low income families.

From the remaining $200,000 donation amount, 10 charities serving the elderly and disadvantaged families received $100,000 from SPH while SPH Foundation gave $100,000 to 10 charities serving underprivileged children and the disabled.

Guest of Honour Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, presented a cheque to Mr Phillip Tan, Chairman of Community Chest, at the event. About 200 guests, including 70 beneficiaries and caregivers, attended the event. They were from Rainbow Centre Yishun Park School, APSN Katong School, MINDS Fernvale Gardens School and AWWA Senior Community Home.

Ms Ng Ling Ling, Managing Director of Community Chest and Assistant Chief Executive Officer, National Council of Social Service, said: “SPH and SPH Foundation have been raising funds for Community Chest for the past 13 years, and we are thankful for their steadfast support. It is with the sustained contributions from partners like SPH and SPH Foundation that we can continue to empower beneficiaries from about 80 charities so that they can live their lives with dignity.”

Apart from the cheque presentation, audiences were treated to a special concert by beneficiaries from three charity organisations, namely Rainbow Centre Yishun Park School, APSN Katong School and MINDS Fernvale Gardens School. The talented beneficiaries took turns to perform a drum performance, a circus act and a dance. The SPH Choir also entertained guests with a repertoire of pop and ethnic folk songs.
