NPARKS & SPH Foundation launches SUN CLUB PROGRAMME
03 October 2006, Tuesday - The ‘Special projects to Understand Nature’ (SUN) Club programme was officially launched at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve today. Sponsored by the Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) Foundation, the SUN Club programme brings tailor-made nature appreciation projects to students with special needs.
Professor Leo Tan, Chairman of the National Parks Board (NParks), graced the
launch ceremony as the Guest-of-Honour. Also present were Ms Ginney Lim,
General Manager of SPH Foundation, Mr Ng Lang, Chief Executive Officer of
NParks, and Mr Charles Ho, Chairman of the Garden City Fund.
Initiated by NParks, the SUN Club programme is supported by a $30,000
sponsorship from SPH Foundation. This programme was developed in
consultation with teachers from special schools, with the aim of making nature
come alive for their students. Participants have chosen to visit Sungei Buloh
Wetland Reserve, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve or Pulau Ubin. The pilot
programme will benefit some 500 students from five special schools – Metta
School, Grace Orchard School, Tanglin School, Delta Senior School and Chao Yang School. Interested schools can contact Ms Jeanne Tan of the National Parks Board, via email jeanne_p_h_tan@nparks.gov.sg or call 6794-2414.
Ms Ginney Lim, General Manager of SPH Foundation commented, “Currently, the existing nature outreach programmes are catered for children from the mainstream schools. SUN Club is the first nature appreciation programme tailored
for children with intellectual and physical disabilities.”
She added, “By supporting SUN Club as the main sponsor, SPH Foundation hopes to enrich the lives of these children through the wonders of nature. We are pleased to be part of such a meaningful programme.”
Mr Charles Ho, Chairman of the Garden City Fund added, "I would like to
commend SPH Foundation for their support in sustaining the Garden City’s green
initiatives. Their contribution towards such value-added educational programmes
will benefit many students. I am happy to see these children learning about nature
and Singapore’s biodiversity through this programme. We look forward to future
collaborations and a lasting partnership with SPH Foundation.”
