Singapore, 31 July 2019 - Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation) presented a total of 27 scholarships at the annual scholarship awards ceremony held at the SPH News Centre auditorium today.

Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, was the Guest-of-Honour at the event.

Dr Lee, in his opening address, said: "Our journalists abide by the highest professional standards to ensure their reports and stories are accurate and reliable. We pride ourselves as a credible source of news that readers can trust. We also strive to provide in-depth and objective insights for readers to gain deeper understanding of what is happening in Singapore and also in the world around us."

There were 3 recipients for the SPH Journalism Scholarship.

Ms Christie Esther Chiu Shi Qi is an SPH Journalism Scholarship award recipient who did her internship stint with The Straits Times. She will be reading Liberal Arts at Yale-NUS College.

She said: "The three months I spent with The Straits Times have been both challenging and fulfilling. Before, I aspired to be a journalist as I wanted to write about my own interests. But since being on the job, I have been exposed to issues outside of my comfort zone and realised that the significance of journalism goes far beyond myself. Journalists hold a responsibility to deliver accurate and crucial truths to readers, which could result in meaningful changes in the lives of others. I am honoured to have received this scholarship and the opportunity to broaden my horizons at Yale-NUS. As the importance of the arts in mainstream education is a matter close to my heart, I hope to contribute to this discussion during my future as a journalist."

Since its inauguration in 2006, the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually. The bond-free scholarships have helped deserving students from modest family backgrounds further their degree programmes in languages, linguistics and the humanities at local universities. This year, there are 9 recipients receiving the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship.

One of the recipient is Mr Chwa Yi Jie who is reading English at the Nanyang Technological University.

He said: " Receiving this award means a lot to me, as I know it encourages students like us in the languages, linguistics and humanities to pursue a degree which we are passionate in, and motivates us to excel in our fields. I am honoured that the award acknowledges the effort and interest I have placed into studying Literature at the university level. The scholarship will help to relieve me from the financial difficulties I had expected to face, such as school fees and daily expenses, thereby enabling me to concentrate more on my studies to perform well. With the help of this award and the skills from my degree, I will definitely be able to make a meaningful contribution to the communications industry as I graduate."

SPH also presented its first Singapore-Industry Scholarship (SgIS) award to Mr Muhammad Rilwan who will be reading Information Systems at the National University of Singapore after he completes his national service. SPH is one of the organisations participating in this multi-industry scholarship in partnership with the Singapore government, which aims to groom the next generation of talents in Singapore's strategic sectors like infocomm media, transport and social services.

He said: "I am greatly humbled to receive the Singapore-Industry Scholarship (SgIS) from SPH. With the world becoming increasingly digitalised, the role of media has evolved to become extremely important. After completing my degree in Information Systems at NUS, I hope to play my part in helping SPH maintain its pivotal role in the industry. I am looking forward to overcoming challenges that await in the near future."
