- 4 SPH Journalism Scholarships presented
- 14 in-house scholarships given out to children of staff and newspaper vendors
- 11 Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships awarded to students pursuing languages and humanities studies
Singapore, 16 July 2018 - Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation) presented a total of 29 scholarships at the annual scholarship awards ceremony held at the SPH News Centre auditorium today.
Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, was the Guest-of-Honour at the event.
There were 4 recipients for the SPH Journalism Scholarship.
A total of 14 scholarships were also given out to the children of staff and newspaper vendors – 5 for junior college studies, 4 for polytechnic studies and 5 for university studies.
Dr Lee, in his opening address, said: "Journalists should always ensure accurate and objective presentation and delivery of news that readers would want to turn to, and can rely on. SPH will always uphold the highest standard of quality journalism. At the same time, we will also continue to innovate and transform our business operations."
Mr Chua Wei Qian is an SPH Journalism Scholarship award recipient who did his internship stint with Lianhe Wanbao. He will be reading Environmental Studies at the National University of Singapore.
He said: “My internship experience at Lianhe Wanbao has undeniably been an eye-opener and a very enriching one. There's always so much to learn when we conduct our interviews with people from all walks of life -- from how to ask better questions, to learning life lessons from our interviewees. I chose to read Environmental Studies because I think it is crucial for a journalist to have a wealth of knowledge. Moreover, I have always been keen to learn more about the environment, especially in today's context where climate change is real and a worrying issue. I hope with the knowledge acquired, I'd be able to contribute to the education of our readers on environmental issues through writing, or maybe innovate greener solutions at our workplace."
Since its inauguration in 2006, the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually. The bond-free scholarships have helped deserving students from modest family backgrounds further their degree programmes in languages, linguistics and the humanities at local universities. This year, there are11 recipients receiving the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship.
One of them is Ms Sarah R Stanley who is reading Linguistics & Multilingual Studies at the Nanyang Technological University.
She said: "Receiving this scholarship has been such a blessing and has undoubtedly provided me with the financial freedom to truly pursue a degree which doubles as a passion. This one-of-a-kind opportunity is an absolute motivation to continue striving for greater heights and a reminder to continuously foster a generous spirit. I hope that I will be able to use the skills and knowledge gained from my education to contribute to the linguistics and communications scene in Singapore in the future."
