29 teams vie for top honours in SPH Foundation National Primary Schools Tchoukball Championships

Singapore, 11 May 2016 – Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation) will host the fifth edition of the SPH Foundation National Primary Schools Tchoukball Championships this year. The Girls Senior Division finals will be held on 17 May, Tuesday, at Junyuan Primary School, while the Boys Senior Division finals will be held on 19 May, Thursday, at Farrer Park Primary School.

Organised by Tchoukball Association of Singapore (TBAS), the event comprises two categories, namely the Senior Division (for boys and girls aged 13 years and under), and the Junior Division (for boys and girls aged 11 years and under). The Junior Division will be played in November.

Tchoukball is a non-contact team sport that was invented in 1970 and emphasises on speed, teamwork and strategy. It involves a unique set of rules and elements of volleyball, basketball and handball. The sport can be played by anyone regardless of varying physical and sporting abilities.

The sport is swiftly gaining popularity with over 37 associate clubs registered with the TBAS and is now being played in more than 120 schools across Singapore. Tchoukball is now an official sport in the annual POL-ITE Games and Singapore University Games (SUniG). This additional platform allows even more students to play leisurely or competitively. Many secondary schools, ITEs, polytechnic and universities have formed teams to pit their skills through various competitions held throughout the year.

Ms Ginney Lim, General Manager of SPH Foundation, said: "Tchoukball has been growing in popularity in Singapore and is a meaningful sport that inculcates values such as teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship amongst the participants. We are happy to be the title sponsor of the SPH Foundation National Primary Schools Tchoukball Championships for the fifth consecutive year."

Mr Jeff Ang, General Secretary, TBAS, said: "SPH Foundation continues to be our valued partner this year in presenting more opportunities to play Tchoukball to schools throughout Singapore. Participants show strong commitment and quality as they pursue the sport."
