SPH celebrates 35th anniversary with donation to Community Chest

Singapore, 15 August 2019 - Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) will be celebrating its 35th anniversary with a donation to Community Chest at a concert on 22 August 2019 at the Capitol Theatre.

SPH and SPH Foundation will be presenting a cheque to the Community Chest to support selected charities serving disadvantaged families, senior citizens as well as special needs students at this event.

Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, will present a cheque of $426,000 to Mr Phillip Tan, Chairman of Community Chest.

Of this amount, $76,000 was the donation raised from SPH's "Double the Love" fundraising campaign that was conducted from 7 May to 31 July 2019, which will be matched dollar for dollar by SPH and SPH Foundation. In conjunction with SPH's 35th anniversary, SPH and SPH Foundation will increase its donation to a total of $350,000 to Community Chest.

The total donation will go towards the Special Education Financial Assistance (SPED FAS) scheme as well as benefiting children with special needs, vulnerable seniors and disadvantaged families from 20 charitable programmes. Please see attached for more information on SPED and the list of supported charitable programmes.

Dr Lee said: "As we celebrate Singapore's bicentennial year and reflect on our transformation from a small fishing village to a modern metropolis, we are gratified that SPH has been a part of this transformation and progress. We are also grateful for the support of many Singaporeans in the last 35 years. It is thus with heartfelt thanks that we are marking our 35th anniversary with a donation to charities to promote a caring and compassionate society."

Mr Tan said: "We thank SPH for its steadfast support and partnership in supporting those who need our help. Through sustained giving from partners like SPH and its Foundation, we have enabled the social service agencies to continuously meet the needs of their service users."

The specially curated concert, which is part of the SPH Gift of Music series, will showcase Singapore’s homegrown acts Samba Masala, Ding Yi Music Company, MICappella and K-Aos from Académie of Stars.

Samba Masala, which is one of Singapore’s top percussion groups, has performed on both local and international stages. MICappella is a leading vocal band in Singapore, having clinched awards in China and United States. Sharing the stage with them are the talented kids from K-Aos from Académie of Stars, Singapore’s leading talent academy. Rounding up the list of performers is Ding Yi Music Company, a Chinese chamber ensemble, which is best known for their contemporary interpretations of classics. Ding Yi is also a recipient of the Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award this year. Accompanying Ding Yi on stage is visually-impaired erhu player Stephanie Ow who relies on her hearing and memory to play the Chinese instrument.

A total of 159 beneficiaries and caregivers from 10 charity organisations under Community Chest will be invited to catch this concert, followed by a lunch reception. The concert is also open to the public for free, on a first come first served basis.

Perennial Real Estate Holdings Limited is the venue sponsor for the charity concert.

Your reporter and photographer/video crew are invited to cover the event.
