SPH Foundation donates $250,000 to Community Chest

July 31, 2018

Beneficiaries of Community Chest who were invited to this year's SPH and SPH Foundation Charity Cheque Presentation on 31 July were treated to a special lunchtime concert by the TENG Ensemble.

It was the first time the music group was invited to perform at this annual charity event which saw SPH and SPH Foundation Chairman Dr Lee Boon Yang presenting a $350,000 cheque to Vice Chairman Eric Ang of Community Chest at the Singapore Conference Hall. Out of the $350,000 donation amount, $150,000 was donated by SPH Foundation in support of the Special Education Financial Assistance (SPED FAS) Scheme in aid of more than 1,500 disabled and special needs students from low income families. From the remaining $200,000 donation amount, 10 charities serving the elderly and disadvantaged families received $100,000 from SPH while SPH Foundation gave $100,000 to 10 charities serving underprivileged children and the disabled.

The highlight of the event was the SPH Gift of Music concert by The TENG Ensemble who performed to a near full house on a weekday afternoon. The concert programme was specially curated to include many popular hit songs including a medley of Teresa Teng's hits, as well as familiar folk songs. During a heart-warming moment in the concert, sign language interpreter Lily Goh, who is deaf, signed the lyrics of Moonlight in the City, accompanying the melancholic strains of the popular hit song performed by the ensemble. The beneficiaries were also treated to a lunch reception after the concert.
