Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship Award Ceremony

Education Programmes

Funded by the SPH Foundation, the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship was established in 2006 in honour of the late Mr. Lim Kim San, Singapore’s first Minister for National Development, who was instrumental in shaping the nation’s public housing landscape. The bond-free scholarship seeks to support promising undergraduates from modest family backgrounds pursuing full-time languages, linguistics, and humanities degree programs at our local universities.

Recipients have benefitted from this scholarship, gaining financial freedom to focus on their studies and community contributions. Scholars are encouraged to give back through volunteer work during and after their university years, fostering a cycle of positive social impact.

16 awarded Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship in 2026

Sixteen undergraduates received the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship Award Ceremony on 29 July 2026, marking the 21st year of the scholarship programme. Established in 2006, the bond-free scholarship supports promising students from lower-income families in pursuing their university education and empowers them to live up to their potential.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Mr Patrick Daniel, Director of SPH Foundation and Chair of the Scholarship Selection Panel, said: “Many of our scholars balanced demanding academic commitments with part-time work, family responsibilities and community service. More remarkably, they have remained optimistic about the future and are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of others.”

The ceremony also featured a fireside chat with alumni scholars, including Straits Times Correspondent Shabana Begum and Lianhe Zaobao Correspondent Claudia Liao, who reflected on how the scholarship had shaped their university experience and careers.
Commenting on this year’s recipients, Mr Roland Ng, Chairman of SPH Foundation, said: “We hope this Scholarship will not only ease their financial burden but also empower them to fulfil their potential and contribute meaningfully to our society.”
