SPH Foundation announces winners of inaugural photography contest
Singapore, 14 October 2020 - Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) Foundation has announced the eight winners for its inaugural photography contest.
Launched on 13 July 2020, the six-week contest, titled “A Sustainable Tomorrow”, served as a platform for the public to showcase their creativity and storytelling talents through photography while raising awareness on climate change and environmental production.
The contest, which had participants submit their entries by posting on Instagram, attracted over 800 submissions based on the theme of sustainability, including photos of green spaces, urban farming, biodiversity, healthy living and home recycling ideas.
The judging panel consisting of SPH Foundation Director Mr Yatiman Yusof, The Straits Times Picture Editor Ms Stephanie Yeow, Chinese Media Group Newshub Photography Editor Mr Lee Tiah Khee and Mr David Tay, the first Asian Directory Board Member of the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) and one of the most influential figures in Singapore photography, selected the following eight winners:
Top 3 prizes
1st Prize: Mr Ong Yi Chao for “Harmonious Integration”
2nd Prize: Mr Lemuel Jose Aguilar Lucas for “To a Bright Future”
3rd Prize: Mr William Ong for “The Circle of Life”
5 consolation prizes
- Mr Alex Goh for “Urban Farming”
- Mr Ron Low for “Nature · Nurture”
- Mr Suhaimi Abdullah for “Together, We Recycle”
- Mr Lim Wee Chin for “HDB Gardening”
- Mr Teo Chin Leong for “Caring for Nature”
The top three winners will walk away with $3,000, $1,000 and $500 cash respectively, while the five consolation prize winners will each receive $100.
Mr Yatiman Yusof, head of the judging panel said: “The competition seeks to capture how flora and fauna can grow side by side in a humanly created environment. While it is a challenge, it is also an opportunity for Singaporeans to forge and sustain a healthy co-existence. Many of the entries are creative and offer interesting interpretations of the theme.”
Commenting on the photo which clinched the first prize, he added: “It has a strong visual impact on the viewer, and shows a good perspective and messaging of the subject, with the buildings in the background and the otter capturing the co-existence of human life and nature at the same time.”
